Health & Nutrition

Bringing care closer through community health, nutrition, eye care and inclusive services.

We work with communities, health teams and partners to improve access to healthcare and nutrition support across Marsabit, with attention to people who face the greatest barriers to care.

The context

Distance should not determine access to care

For families in Marsabit’s remote pastoralist communities, reaching health services can involve long journeys and transport costs. Food insecurity and gaps in services can place further pressure on household well-being. People with disabilities may face additional barriers to information and care.

Our Health & Nutrition programme connects community engagement with health services, helping people access information, screening and appropriate support. Our Catholic identity guides a commitment to human dignity, compassion and care for vulnerable people.

Our priorities

Care that responds to community needs

01 · COMMUNITY HEALTH

Bringing services closer

Support outreach and community engagement that connect people with health information and services, working alongside health teams and community structures.

02 · NUTRITION

Supporting children and families

Promote nutrition awareness and responses to the needs of vulnerable children and households, recognising the links between food, health and family well-being.

03 · EYE HEALTH

Improving access to screening

Through the MLoVE initiative, support eye health awareness, screening and connections to appropriate services.

04 · INCLUSION

Addressing barriers to care

Engage organisations of persons with disabilities, teachers and community health promoters to understand access challenges and inform more inclusive programme responses.

Programme spotlight · MLoVE

Eye health is part of everyday opportunity

Access to eye care matters for learning, work and participation in community life. The MLoVE initiative brings eye health and inclusion into our work with communities and health services.

Community engagement helps identify barriers, while screening and links to appropriate services help connect people with care.

Our approach

From community priorities to coordinated action

Listen and understand

Engage communities to understand their priorities and the practical obstacles to accessing services.

Work together

Collaborate with health teams, community structures and partners to connect local knowledge with technical services.

Learn and adapt

Use community feedback and programme learning to improve coordination, inclusion and the way support is delivered.

Health connects our work

Good health depends on safe water, sanitation, adequate food and secure livelihoods. We connect these priorities across Caritas Marsabit’s programmes so that support reflects the wider needs of individuals and households.
