Who we are
Faith expressed through service
Caritas Marsabit gives practical expression to the Catholic Church’s mission of love and service. Our work is rooted in respect for the dignity of every person and a commitment to accompany people facing poverty, exclusion, conflict and humanitarian need.
We bring together humanitarian response and longer-term development. This means responding to immediate needs while working with communities to strengthen the knowledge, relationships, services and opportunities that support lasting well-being.
Our Catholic identity guides how we serve: with compassion, honesty and responsible stewardship. We recognise communities as partners with knowledge, skills and priorities of their own, and seek to strengthen their participation in decisions that affect their lives.
Local relationships and a wider spirit of solidarity
As a diocesan organisation, our work is grounded in relationships with local communities and Church structures. We collaborate with community institutions, public services, civil society and development partners. Cooperation with Caritas partners connects this local commitment with a wider spirit of solidarity, learning and shared service.
Community trust is built through listening, respectful engagement and following through on commitments. We seek to earn and sustain that trust through participation, dialogue and accountability.

Where we work
Working in the context of Marsabit’s drylands
Our work centres on Marsabit County in northern Kenya, where pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities draw on livestock, land, water, trade and diverse forms of local knowledge.
Recurring drought, changing rainfall, long distances to services and pressure on shared resources can affect household well-being. These challenges sit alongside strong community institutions, mutual support systems and opportunities for cooperation and enterprise.
Programme activities are shaped by local priorities and project scope, including work in areas such as North Horr, Laisamis, Loiyangalani and Illeret. Cross-border collaboration also supports dialogue, livelihoods and cooperation where communities share social, economic and resource relationships.
We aim to understand each setting on its own terms, working with local people and relevant institutions to develop practical, appropriate responses.

Programme reviews, field monitoring, community feedback and documentation help teams understand progress, identify barriers and adapt their work.
Our approaches
How we work alongside communities
Community participation
Engage people in identifying priorities, shaping activities and reviewing progress. Build on local knowledge and encourage shared responsibility.
Human dignity and inclusion
Recognise the capacities and rights of each person. Pay attention to barriers affecting women, children, young people, older people and persons with disabilities.
Integrated development
Connect programmes where needs overlap, recognising that health, livelihoods, water, peace and the environment influence one another.
Locally led resilience
Support preparedness, practical skills and community institutions so that people can respond to change and sustain progress.
Conflict sensitivity
Consider how programme decisions affect relationships and access to resources. Promote dialogue and cooperation across community boundaries.
Partnership and learning
Coordinate with relevant institutions, share experience and use feedback to improve the quality and relevance of support.
Safeguarding and accountability
Respectful and safe engagement is essential to our work. Safeguarding, responsible handling of information and clear ways to raise concerns help protect people and strengthen accountability.
Community members and other stakeholders can use the website’s feedback and complaints channel to share concerns. Sensitive personal information should be handled through the appropriate reporting and referral arrangements.
